Mission Camp in Gerenge..

Mission camp has also been on. From the 19-24 of March we spent our days in Gerenge, Entebbe. It was a good camp, learnt much about God and religion and stuff. I don’t know about you, but I was so blessed. Also I was in charge of one of the bible groups, I was a bit nervous in the beginning but I think we came out of it with some more knowledge. Two of the not so good parts of the camp were the increasing number of spiders in my bed, and in the party tents, and the rain that tried to wash us away. The camp contained a lot of interesting subject and happenings. One thing I tried to develop during the camp was my speaking in tongue ability. But after one Macarena and two Schatman came out of my mouth in stead, I think I am to realise that speaking in tongues is not my strongest gift. But I have other good qualities. hehe..

View from Miriams village...

On Palm Sunday we turned our nose towards Kabale, about two hours closer to Rwanda. That felt almost like coming home, with steep hills and mountains and the cold. Quite interesting to see how they had divided their gardens in a most strange sideway way. Also we went to Lake Bunyonyi . as a result of that Jo and I went in a wood canoe trying to make sense out of the wind direction. Felt a bit like Pocahontas. After this trip I am proud to say...I almost like Matoke;)

stuff that has been going on

Early March Kyambogo campus was looked down. Mainly because of teachers not satisfied with their salaries, and that made the students go a bit wild. The day the rebelling started I was actually in the chapel and wondering why so few people where gathered. Suddenly a saw a police tanks passing by, and a lot of fast cars packed with police, and the air smelled funny. Later I where to find out that is was teargas. But for me that was about all the drama I got.

Mulago hospital visitors
One sunny Thursday I and Joanna got to join Thaddeus at the Mulago hospital. For the record that is where last king of Scotland were recorded. That trip turned out to be quite a trip for someone a bit afraid of blood and sick people. First we entered the intensive department of the hospital. Not exactly like Norwegian health rules I would dare to say. We walked around to see in the different floors, for babies, broken bones, burns and so on. People where squished into small rooms with many others, privacy is not even a word with meaning. I felt a bit like a mixture of a tourist and an alien, knowing that if I fell sick, there would be a pretty comfortable room waiting for me on the top floor.

Pancakes

Again since valentine we tried to make pancakes, but this time with Robert and Prince. I would dare to say that the result was quite excellent.

Gulu trip

Flower power

Not easy to always try updating your blog, berre så det e sagt..but I will try taking a brief summarize of the last happenings in February before I go on. In the end of last month I have grown one year older. But the pictures from that day you have to see on Joanna’s blog. It was a really good day, even got Mirinda orange on my bed, and a surprise party, it was særdeleisen awesome!! In the beginning of March we have also been to Gulu. And here is how that went:

The streets of Gulu

After a good African waiting period early in the day Young Christian, I, Joanna, Justine and Eddie jumped in to the Focus pick up heading for Gulu in the north. We where soon to discover that the car had a small handicap: all the seats we turning slightly towards the right. Quite interesting I would say. But it turned out to be a fun experience on our seven hour drive on these bumpy roads. Justine actually managed to sleep some, but soon she ended up behind my back in an acrobatic way. The second day on our journey we attended a “light the fire at campuses…” conference. That was a whole lot of Ugandan singing, and less speech. The second day in Gulu we went to a refugee camp close to the university in Gulu, fourth biggest in north at this point. It used to be even larger but many are travelling back to their villages because the situation is calming down, and hopefully the over ten year long war is over. At the camp most of the kids where quite curious about us, and soon we had a long tale of children behind us. The mzungus also got attacked by some cows, just as entertaining and amusement for all the children watching us.

To walk around in the camp felt like being inside or on a TV screen, it didn’t feel real. This is something that only happens in fare away places. Looking at the kids with big stomachs, dirty clothes and smiling faces made me realise that my thoughts were old because now I am in Uganda. We where told that the biggest problems in the camp are food, water, hygiene and actually the most basic needs. During the day most grown ups walk back to their villages to sow or harvest the food they eat because the land around the camp is to dry to make anything grow. The people at the camp get some support from the UN and Red Cross, but they can’t rely on these supplies because they don’t come at regular times. Around the camp many guards walking and looking after the camp, they lived in small huts just outside the area.

Audition,Valentine and moving...

Here one week in the beginning of February on my walk to Kyambogo some guy came up to me and said: “hey you, do you wanna act in a Ugandan movie?” After he explained the plot about gorillas attacking tourist, and the where lacking some mzungu people we agreed that I would call. Sadly we were away when the second audition was, so it is not easy to wanna be a Ugandan movie star:)

Since the students finally came back in the fare beginning of February I finally started my discipleship with my two friends. That was quite good. But I soon discovered that my talking had to be less, and the disciplined had to talk more. But anyways I am starting to be a ringfox on the loud prayer contribution.

Valentines

Valentines was quite a good event. First me, Joanna, Janki and Vicky went for a romantic picnic in the Kyambogo pastor’s garden. We had self made pancakes, cupcakes, biscuits. Vicky had made a beautiful flower decoration for the occasion. So romanticJ after that the Norwegians and Joel went to the movies, to watch Atonement with all the different Ugandan couples. The cinema was decorated with all kind of read balloons, ropes etc. And as we soon discovered red and black is the official clothing code today. Love today…

On tapping moving feet
About two weeks ago, it was decided that we would move out of our host family of different reasons. But that also meant we had to go window-shopping for a new place to live. The first week we ended up at Uncle Sams place. Lucky for us the mosque neighbour had broken their speaker, so no five o’clock in the morning prayer. The second week we got a room on the ground floor in a hostel in Wandegeya. I suspect it hadn’t been washed in quite some time. There was a Titanic hand on the wall.

Here the other day I also had to go buy myself a new mattress. First I went to bargain on the market in Wandegeya, when we decided on a price I had to place the thing on my head and carry it back to the hostel. And I tell you, it is hard balancing a thing like that when there are people everywhere, and you even have to cross a jammed road.
