Not easy to always try updating your blog, berre så det e sagt..but I will try taking a brief summarize of the last happenings in February before I go on. In the end of last month I have grown one year older. But the pictures from that day you have to see on Joanna’s blog. It was a really good day, even got Mirinda orange on my bed, and a surprise party, it was særdeleisen awesome!! In the beginning of March we have also been to Gulu. And here is how that went:

The streets of Gulu
After a good African waiting period early in the day Young Christian, I, Joanna, Justine and Eddie jumped in to the Focus pick up heading for Gulu in the north. We where soon to discover that the car had a small handicap: all the seats we turning slightly towards the right. Quite interesting I would say. But it turned out to be a fun experience on our seven hour drive on these bumpy roads. Justine actually managed to sleep some, but soon she ended up behind my back in an acrobatic way. The second day on our journey we attended a “light the fire at campuses…” conference. That was a whole lot of Ugandan singing, and less speech. The second day in Gulu we went to a refugee camp close to the university in Gulu, fourth biggest in north at this point. It used to be even larger but many are travelling back to their villages because the situation is calming down, and hopefully the over ten year long war is over. At the camp most of the kids where quite curious about us, and soon we had a long tale of children behind us. The mzungus also got attacked by some cows, just as entertaining and amusement for all the children watching us.

To walk around in the camp felt like being inside or on a TV screen, it didn’t feel real. This is something that only happens in fare away places. Looking at the kids with big stomachs, dirty clothes and smiling faces made me realise that my thoughts were old because now I am in Uganda. We where told that the biggest problems in the camp are food, water, hygiene and actually the most basic needs. During the day most grown ups walk back to their villages to sow or harvest the food they eat because the land around the camp is to dry to make anything grow. The people at the camp get some support from the UN and Red Cross, but they can’t rely on these supplies because they don’t come at regular times. Around the camp many guards walking and looking after the camp, they lived in small huts just outside the area.

Valentines was quite a good event. First me, Joanna, Janki and Vicky went for a romantic picnic in the Kyambogo pastor’s garden. We had self made pancakes, cupcakes, biscuits. Vicky had made a beautiful flower decoration for the occasion. So romanticJ after that the Norwegians and Joel went to the movies, to watch Atonement with all the different Ugandan couples. The cinema was decorated with all kind of read balloons, ropes etc. And as we soon discovered red and black is the official clothing code today. Love today…

Here the other day I also had to go buy myself a new mattress. First I went to bargain on the market in Wandegeya, when we decided on a price I had to place the thing on my head and carry it back to the hostel. And I tell you, it is hard balancing a thing like that when there are people everywhere, and you even have to cross a jammed road.
